Dr. Josephine McKeown is a psychiatrist who specialises in adolescent and youth psychiatry and generally sees young people between 12 and 25 years of age and also provides support for families and carers. Dr McKeown sees young people with a number of psychiatric disorders including Psychosis,Depression,Anxiety,Bipolar Affective Disorder, OCD,Eating Disorders,Autism Spectrum Disorder,Personality Disorder and Learning Disorders. Dr McKeown has worked at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Orygen Youth Health and The Melbourne Clinic and Clarendal Medical Centre.Dr McKeown graduated as a medical practitioner from Monash University in 1986 and has worked in both public hospitals and general practice prior to training as a psychiatrist.
Dr McKeown will usually see the young person and interview their parents if they are under 18 for an initial assessment which is usually conducted over 2 separate appointments. If the person is 18 or above, Dr McKeown will usually see the person on their own however she is happy to involve parents should the young person be agreeable. Feedback is usually then given to the young person and/or family about possible diagnoses, taking into account the personality style and background history of the person and their family. A treatment plan can then be developed in a collaborative manner which takes into account biological, psychological, environmental and lifestyle factors. Dr McKeown does not admit inpatients to hospital although works collaboratively with various inpatient treating psychiatrists should admission be required.
